Prof. Wen-Ping Cao is holder of Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award，chair in Electrical Power Engineering，and head of Power Electronics, Machines and Power System Group of Aston University, England. Wenping Cao received the B.Eng in electrical engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University in 1991, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical machines and drives from the University of Nottingham in 2004. Prof. Cao was the recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2013 International Symposium on Linear Drives for Industry Applications, the Innovator of the Year Award from Newcastle University in 2013, and the Dragon’s Den Competition Award from Queen’s University Belfast in 2014. He was a semi-finalist at the Annual MIT-CHIEF Business Plan Contest, USA, in 2015. Prof. Cao is currently the Chairman for Industrial Electronics Society, IEEE UK & Ireland Section. His research interests include fault analysis and condition monitoring of electric machines and power electronics.
This talk is concerned with electrical machine condition monitoring technologies. It will start with a basic knowledge of condition monitoring technologies, followed by the failures and causes of major electrical machines including electrical, thermal, mechanical and environmental ageing. Generally, condition monitoring systems consist of: 1) sensors to capture the signal or the state of the condition, 2) network and data to collect and process the information; 3) retrieval of key parameters and fault signatures, and 4) actions to respond to the estimated conditions. Finally, parametric Identification techniques will be discussed to conclude the talk. Discussions are welcome.
